This was one of my most magical and amazing photo sessions to date. We decided to be adventurous and to a part of a location we hadn’t shot at before. We were rewarded with beautiful light, an amazing sunet and wild horses!! It was almost too good to be true! We couldn’t believe they were real and just standing there drinking the water in the stream just posing for photos. Just take a look!

I knew it was going to be a great shoot when I found out my clients name is almost the same as mine (Therese) and her daughter’s name is almost the same as my daughter’s (Elle)! With so much in common I just knew we would mesh well . Even with our first location getting closed down for the day, and us racing to a new location before the sun set, the photos turned out great. They were so much fun and such good sports. My whole family fell in love with little Elle. In fact, they still talk about her! Enjoy their gorgeous photos!

My client had a super awesome idea of doing a boudoir session with a Noir theme ( Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime drama, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations). I was all for it and very excited! She got really nervous before the shoot and almost canceled but she stayed strong and after her make-up was done I could tell she was going to rock it! I am so proud of her! We got some amazing shots.. in fact.. I loved them all! I was so happy she chose these for my blog so i could show her off!

Amanda Sieckman with Pretty Pretty Please salon and I have been working on this for a while and are finally ready to announce that we are doing Cosplay photoshoots! Our first set is inspired by the books we love, The Hunger Games. There are so many wonderful characters and places in the book to gather inspiration from. We love the author’s description of the people who live in The Capitol and decided to start there. The colored skin, the fancy outlandish clothing, the beautiful make-up….we couldn’t wait to get started! All make-up was done by Amanda and the photography and editing done by myself. Such fun!!

Meet Annalise, she lives in The Captiol and is 11 years old! She spends her day shopping and relaxing. She carries home her brightly wrapped purchases and pauses to watch The Hunger Games live on her little television. Her favorite tributes are Thresh from District 11 and Katniss from District 12.

Stuff Faux Photographers Say!

I am a huge fan of the video “Sh*t Girls Say”. As soon as my sister shared them with me I watched episodes one and two about 50 times in a row and proceeded to quote it for the rest of the month. During a night of insomnia I thought it would be so funny if he made one about photographers! I wanted to email the dude my suggestion, but then I thought “well why can’t I make one??”. Humm?? I thought “haha ya maybe someday, that sure would be funny!” You see, I cant even tell you how many thoughts like this come into my brain. My mind never stops working.. and it dreams. BIG TIME. This is just one of those little ideas. One night while I was sitting alone in my room (wishing I had cable tv) Rob came up to see what I was doing. I was writing in my photography journal and I told him I had so many ideas about photography swimming around in my head and one of them was this video, which I already wrote a script for (haha!). He immediately took an interest! I expected him to just laugh it off and go play his video game . So of course I took the interest as a “let’s do it!”. We took the kids that Saturday to Party City and got a wig, we got a lovely shirt at Walmart and filmed the scenes that day!

Rob had the difficult job of editing it. That really is key it seems, cutting the video properly can make it funny or..well.. break it. It took a couple weeks but I think he did a wonderful job and I am so proud of him. Actually I am so proud of US for doing something we wanted to do ..for following through with an idea. That isnt that easy when you have a job and 5 kids and etc….so yeay us!!!

But, that my friends, turns out to be the easy part of it all! Actually uploading it, sharing it and just putting it out there is pretty much terrifying. I have a huge headache as I write this just from the stress of the video being viewed. Of course I am silly and dramatic but I think it really shows how vulnerable you are when you follow a dream.. or just a simple idea. I think people don’t realize this.. unless they’ve done it. With my photography in general I am very sensitive .. that is why it took me years to offer my services. And *that* is why this video is important to me! I need to not take myself so seriously. To not take my job, even if it is my dream, as if its a matter of life and death. To admit I am a faux-photographer!

Sometimes you have to give yourself permission to not be great at something. To just try it and have fun with it. To put yourself out there and know no matter what others think of you that you did your best. Allow yourself to just play, like when you were little and life was fun. Sure you might do this and everyone laughs AT you and the trolls tell you ‘you suck’ and ‘you should kill yourself’. And maybe this other video that is JUST LIKE YOURS is uploaded the SAME day and you end up being compared to a very funny video that has wayy more views but …… you gotta just chill. Remember that your Father in Heaven has it all under control. Even this little video and the timing of the upload.. its all in His plan. Just as any parent loves to take her child to the park to play the Lord loves to watch US play. So play your best, know that everything happens for HIS reasons and let it bring glory to God.

Anyway.. long story short here is our video. I think its super cute and I am very proud of my man! I hope it brings you happiness for a few minutes out of your day. Life is short <3

End of year blog post

A year in review blog post. Sure, why not?2011 was an extremely difficult year. Probably my worst (although its a close call with the year Ella died). I don’t want to focus on the negative so I will just talk about what I learned from it.

First, I learned how important prayer is. Without it you pretty much don’t have any hope. You may think you do, but that is a dangerous & arrogant mistake. I have been praying for guidance with regards to my photography. The problem so far has been the fact that I am like a split personality. I love the artsy photos, I think about them most of the night. I write down photo ideas all day and night… and that part of me would be totally satisfied with doing only those type of photos for the rest of my life. There is, however, two problems with that. Number one, I am not that good at it. And number two, there is another part of me that loves nothing more then a beautiful real portraits. So, what to do?First I finally narrowed down the type of portraits I love the most. It is glam photography. Basically modeling photos with unique set ups and make up (for me, boudoir falls into that group). So I am trying to focus in on that. It’s not that I don’t love babies or families, because I do. It’s just not what I was born to do.Second, I realized I have to spend a lot more time learning my art, my style. I love my photos to look like a day dream and I have always said that. But I lose that vision too regularly. I decided to spend all the days I am not working on client work creating my day dream photos. I am going to include the children more so I will get to be with them even while creating my art.Everyday I pray that God will help me become the best Catholic, wife, mother and photographer I can possibly be. This year, I had many distractions (that’s life) and I think I have learned how to keep moving even when things get turned upside down. You have to keep your eye on the (day) dream. So living through the worst year of my life did have benefits. It did teach me a lot. Now I just have to make sure I don’t forget ..and to keep praying! With God, all things are possible.I hope you have a wonderful 2012!!!

<3, THighlights of my year

I had about 50 client sessions. That’s not bad right? About one a week!
My work was published many times and 4 that I saw myself! Including a national ad campagine!
I was a finalist in the Project Imagin8tion contest by Ron and Bryce Howard. Out of 96,00 entries I was one of the “best”!! (I will always be sad I didnt win it though haha!”)
I learned. A LOT.
My mentor, Brooke Shaden, (even if she doesn’t really mentor me personally) emailed me a couple times!!! Even offered a free ticket to meet her at an event!!! I cant even believe Im writing that, its just so awesome! (I wasnt able to make it, Ill always be sad about that too!)
Oh ya! I got my Mark ii in 2011! I feel like Ive had it forever, its such a part of me! (Thank you A & B, youll never know what that loan meant to me)
And the thing I am most proud of. I never gave up on hope or faith and I never stopped loving!!

Easy Levitation / Floating / Flying Tutorial!

I have been asked countless, COUNTLESS times how I do my floating photos. First of all, there is so much I DO NOT know, I want to take a class on it myself. However, I do know the basics of it. I taught myself honestly, and there may be a lot of different ways to do this. This is the only way I know that looks real and is actually very simple. Someday I hope to learn how to float in all different situations like My Brooke does…. maybe by sharing what I know I will be more likey to have the favor returned .

This is my first tutorial so I hope you can follow along!! Here we go!

My Easy Peasy Floating/Levitation/Flying Tutorial

The Photo-taking Part

1. Set up your camera & tripod.

2. Put stool in place and auto focus the camera on it.

3. After it’s in focus set your lens to “manual focus” to ‘lock’ the focus and don’t change it.

4. Climb on the stool and try to look weightless

5. Use remote to take photo. (if you don’t have a remote. Set the timer and run to the stool and lay down as fast as you can)

5. DO NOT MOVE THE CAMERA or the tripod or change the focus!

6. Get down and move everything out of the camera’s view.

7. DONT TOCUH THE CAMERA or the tripod or change the focus!

8. Take a photo of the empty background —being careful to not move your camera!

That is it for the photo taking part!! (you can put your lens back on auto focus).

The Photo-shop Part

1. Open the floating photo.

2. Open the background photo.

3. Push “V” on your key board, click on the floating photo and drag it onto the background photo.

4. Lower the opacity to %50 so you can see where to line up your photo.

5. Move the opacity back up to %100 and click the “layer mask” icon for the top layer.

6. Grab a black brush. Leave it at %100 and set it at about %50 hardness.

7. Start painting over the part of the stool you want to erase.

8. If you mess up switch the brush to white and fix it.

9. Zoom in to make sure you get all the stool.

10. Zoom back out and switch from black to white till you get it perfect.

11. Admire how cool you look floating in mid air!!

12. Flatten the photo tweak it and run some actions to make it look even more real!

13. That’s it! Share with friends

So many blogs are written by photographers about why professional photographers are such an investment (aka charge so much). I, myself, have written one similar. But not enough blogs are written to express how the photographer feels about their client and their sessions;…so that is what I am going to attempt to do right now! First of all I know how difficult it is to find a good photographer in your budget that offers everything you want. I also know how hard it is to plan a day for a shoot. To get your family together is hard enough but to get them all together and in a good mood?? Good luck!. Picking a day is one of the most difficult steps, sometimes you just have to pick it and hope for the best. Moods always change. I know it may not work out, I know your baby might get sick! Its ok, we can reschedule! (once, for free . I know that you and the Mr. (or Mrs) will probably be fighting when you arrive, and I say “probably” bc you almost always are!. Maybe you got lost, maybe mom forgot to change into her nice shoes bc she was getting the kids ready for the shoot and naturally this is dads fault. I know you are stressed out! It is okay! You don’t have to put on a pretense for me, its life… and its ok! I love you anyway. Just stay calm and we will get a great shot.

To help make your shoot super special I understand how hard you worked to pick the perfect outfits. I try to help guide you into what to buy but I am not the one searching the mall for hours to find the perfectly matching, not too bright, not too girly, and not to expensive outfits that will be in your photos for.. ever, you are! And I know it’s not fun! You’ve already paid a lot of money for a photographer and now you have to spend X amount more on the clothes! So I understand and respect the effort you have put into your shoot. Just remember that there is NO such thing as perfect. My goal is to get you at least one MONEY shot (that’s what I name the best shot, the one you’re going to want to print huge) but it is NOT to make your family look like porcelain dolls. You are not paid models and more importantly your children are not either! Those types of photos are what you get in a studio, that is not what I do. I will Photoshop you to look refreshed, but I can’t Photoshop a bad attitude or the sad face off a child who just got scolded for not smiling good enough. I have 6 kids and understand what you are going through, I will do my best to make you happy but the more relaxed you are the better your photos will turn out.

I feel a photo shoot will only turn out beautifully if there is mutual love and respect between the client , photographer and the kids! Try to be open and honest, and I will do the same. Just don’t worry so much, its only a photograph. People first, then photos .

L.O.V.E this family. The parents were wonderful, the girls were not only beautiful but well loved AND very polite. First thing the older daughter said was ”Hi, I’m Grace” …. how amazing is that? They were dressed perfectly for Christmas card photos. They looked like they were out of a Christmas movie… I could not have asked for better clients. Just so in love!

I had the honor to shoot this beautiful wedding in Flagstaff. It was the first official wedding I ever photographed and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The couple had the unique idea of finding a spot in the woods and exchanging vows. It was just 7 of us..which made it very intimate and beautiful. The bride found a perfect spot and the cereomy was solely about them and their promise to each other. It wasn’t about spending a crazy amount of money and showing off as a couple. It was about love…and they were so in love!! If I could get married again I would do it like they did. The details the bride brought to the little wedding were so special and God provided perfect weather and scenery! Even the timing couldn’t have been better. They were truly blessed and Rob and I were so happy to be part of their amazing day.

Super fun photo shoot with my love bugs. (this was actually ‘Anna’s shoot’ but Sara came along and looked so cute I had to put her in some). We just pulled over on the side of the road when we thought the sun looked right. So fun! The bird cage shots make me laugh!!! I always tell my clients “well, lets just try it… you never know!” I’m putting them on here just bc its a great memory for us

I think this is honestly a great gift idea! I would think that even if I weren’t the photographer. It is so original and thoughtful . I am going to list people it would make a great gift for/from.

Grandparent to their child = perfect way to get those pictures of the grand babies you’ve been asking for!!!
Group gift to bride at bridal shower = boudoir shots for future hubby!!
Group baby shower gift = ensure she will get newborn photos right after the baby is born!

Any monkey can take a picture… you just aim and click. Its not that difficult, its not rocket science. Right? Actually if you were physiclly able to do the photos yourself you would. If you didnt want to be in them, or if you had the right equipment or had lots of extra time to learn photoshop you wouldnt havae to hire anybody to click the camera. With the digital age and everyone buying an awesome digital camera people really do think this way. Photography isnt thought of as art any more. I want to remind everyone that its not just somebody pushing a button that you are praying for, there is so much more that goes into it and you will see why a professional photographer is worth the investment.

One of my fave movies is “You’ve Got Mail”. The lead female character owns a tiny book store filled with treasures during the discount age. Everyone wants the most they can get for the least amount of money. But her shop isnt just about selling books. She knows her stuff and is good at it. She loves everything about what she does and that makes for a beautiful shopping experience for her customers. Then here comes Joe Fox, the ‘book selling monkey from a discount bookstore’. He just doesnt get it:

“George Pappas: The, uh, illustrations are hand tipped.
Joe Fox: And that’s why it costs so much?
George Pappas: No, that’s why it’s WORTH so much.”

The same is true for photography. This isnt just about the pic you may or may not be able to snap yourself. Its about the artistry. Its about everything you dont see. The brain storming before your shoot, the hours of editing afterward. The unique vision, years of practice and passion the photographer has for her craft are really what you pay for.

Now please allow me to show you a few examples of the love I pour into each photo and you can decided for yourself what my worth is.

Free High Key Photoshop Action Review

I wanted a high key look for my photo and am pleased with the results.

High Key always hides the imperfections in skin because it makes it much brighter then a regular black and white process..

The only thing I changed after I ran the action was to lighten one of my under eye circles, not even high key could fix that sucker! lol .

Other then that. I love it

I’ve known this girl since she was 6 months old. She was in my wedding 11 years ago and now, in a couple weeks she will be getting married!! I will miss the wedding….. due to the events in my life right now. I am so beyond broken hearted but am happy I was able to see her and take these boudoir photos for her soon to be hubby. We ordered a very nice leather book of all the pics and he loved them!! (of course he did!)

Mommy Makeover Winner Photo shoot!!!! Surprise & Chandler Arizona

Rosa won our Mommy make over contest on Mother’s day but she graciously gave her prize to her sweet mother! Rose wasnt in need of a make over but that wasn’t the point! The point was to make her feel beautiful and relaxed. Michelle Green with Shea Madison Salon in Chandler, Arizona refreshed her look by taking a little bit of the length of her hair and giving her some beautiful highlights! Its the perfect summer style. Amanda Sieckman with Pretty Pretty Please (also in Chandler) brightened up her look with lovely earth tone makeup while making her eyes pop with some eye liner. Rose was very happy with the final result and said she she never looked so pretty!

After the make over we went for a short drive and took some photos of her new look along with some of her granddaughter and daughter. I think it turned out beautifully! These girls were just wonderful!

I can’t even remember where I first heard about Maggie’s Place, but it stuck in my memory for years. I am very pro-life and one night while praying I started to think about this wonderful place I had read about and wished I could be part of.

“Maggie’s Place is a community that provides houses of hospitality for expectant women who wish to achieve their goals in a dignified atmosphere. I made a mental note to be sure to email and ask if I could possibly do some photos of the babies. To my delight I got a response very quickly and they said “yes”! Maggie’s Place has 4 different homes in the Arizona valley and I get to meet all the new babies. I can’t even tell you how excited I am.

I was super nervous with the first shoot. I really wanted it to go well because I was so honored to even be allowed in. When I got there I felt very welcome and at home. Just like I was hanging out with my girl friends . The two baby girls I had the pleasure to photograph were SO beautiful. They were little angels. I was BEYOND in love!!! Their mothers were so wonderful and loving, it was so amazing to meet them. It was just an amazing experience for me and my hubby. I cant wait till we get to visit one of the other homes (later this month!). Look out for more blogs with more sweet newborns!!!

Yesterday I did a clone shot that had been in my mind for a while. I wanted it to look like I had been “blown away” by the magical contents of a box. To look “blown” I needed a fan to blow my hair (well need is a strong word, I could have flipped it). Anyway my fan is broken and has to lean against something or it moves and blows straight up. I couldnt find anything to lean it on and Andrew was with me (like always) so I said “hey you, come hold this fan right here for mommy” he said “hold it?” I said “yep” he said “here?” I said “yep, good boy!!!” He did a good job, my little assistant .

I combined this with 3 other photos to create the final shot. Its not perfect but I like it and have a good memory from it!
